The biggest thing to have in mind when buying or even looking at a new computer is as follows.
The first and by far most important consideration is "what are you going to use it for" chances are that if you are going to buy a computer then it's to cover some sort of need.
In the massive world of computers the usage pretty much dictates what you should buy. The following list gives a broad overview.
Social networking. Internet, mail, twitter. These are "easy" applications handled by even the simplest of computers. Do however consider manufacturer, laptop/desktop, noise level and price.
General office use. Go to any of the bigger manufacturers they all have office computer lines that will do the job just fine.
Media computers. This is where "buying a computer" gets interesting. Now you are looking at more considerations then one. Main thing in a media computer is storage space, while you can manage with around 500gb keep in mind that hard drives are cheap. And easier to buy pre installed and setup. Second thing to consider is the graphics card, hard you connecting to a big screen TV? Make sure that the card supports this and to a Google search about other experience with using that particular card on a TV. No matter the manufacturer this is one computer use where you don't want to save money. Saving here can lead to a lot of frustration later.
· High end gaming computer. Make sure you have a solid budget and do you research before going anywhere. Pretty much any big electronic store will NOT sell you a true high end computer because these aren't really made for that type of sale. To be honest there is only one large and that is Alienware now owned by Dell. The first one I can mention is Alienware Aurora ALX starting at about 1900$. So if you don't want a Dell I would recommend study their models and make notes of amount of RAM, type of cpu and what type of graphics card they have. And then specify when you get to the store do NOT let them talk you into "this is just as good"
There is a reason that a server is generally more expensive then a normal computer. In the same way a true high-end computer is built for a very specific task, and that generally cost more.
